I’m Derfel Owen. I’m 30 years old and work at the University of Exeter.
I have decided to give blogging a go. To be honest, I have no idea if I will be any good at it, because I tend to have a hundred and ten things going on my head at any given time. I know that pretty much every social media guru or ‘dummies guide to blogging’ would say that I should choose one topic (food, pigs, aeroplanes or whatever) and them stick resolutely to that until I build up a loyal band of weirdos to call my posse, but I just don’t think I am remotely specialist or clever enough to sustain that. So, my plan is to blog about whatever takes my fancy when I feel like blogging.
I am almost certain that this will lead me down 3 and a half paths:
- Social media: I am completely mesmerised by the power of social media to change the way we live and communicate with each other. I am constantly looking to learn new things, and will no doubt find this a good way to keep track of it
- Higher Education: I been in HE now for 11 years (4 as a student) and working in students unions, national HE bodies and universities since. I am passionate about our university sector in the UK and the power of HE to change lives. Given that I now work at the University of Exeter rather than a national body, I think I will find this a good outlet for my wide-ranging interests and views on higher education policy
- Politics: my real passion in life is politics. I love everything about it. I’m a genuine swing voter, I tend to take a pretty liberal stance on most things apart from constitutional issues, where I tend to just want everything to be left alone!
- The 0.5 may be dogs! I love dogs and always have done, but more than that I am a Kennel Club accredited dog judge! A random hobby that I picked up from my parents years ago, and still really enjoy, despite not being able to commit as much time to it as I would like.
So there! I hope I’m going to enjoy this, I suspect I’ll find myself gravitating more towards one or the other the topics above, but who knows!
Thanks for reading.
Lets see how I get on!
